Abstract

Assessing the degree of granitic weathering is crucial for ensuring the long-term resilience of slope structures. Traditional methods, while valuable, are often labor-intensive and may lack the efficiency required for large-scale monitoring. This preliminary study introduces a practical approach for preliminary weathering assessment of granitic rocks by integrating CIELAB color space and image analysis with geomechanical validation through uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Conducted at Kuad Quarry in Penang, Malaysia, the research involved collecting color data from 128 specific points across six distinct rock slopes using a colorimeter to obtain L∗, a∗, and b∗ values. This color data was then processed using JudGeo software for image analysis. The findings revealed a strong correlation between a∗ and b∗ values, directly linking color variation to weathering grades. Image analysis showed that over 70% of the slopes were classified as weathering grades I and II, with a minimal presence of more severely weathered grades. This methodology provides a robust, efficient, and non-destructive framework for evaluating rock weathering, which can significantly enhance slope monitoring and stability assessments, supporting resilient infrastructure maintenance.
